TFT Woodexperts Virtual Examination Success

TFT Woodexperts Successfully Deliver the Level 4 Certificate in Wood Science and Timber Technology Examination Via Virtual Session

Level 4 Certificate in Wood Science & Timber Technology Virtual Examination Success

Considering the Covid-19 situation, our long term and valued partner TFT Woodexperts developed a system which enables students to undertake their exams via a virtual platform. Candidates work remotely at their respective company’s premises linked into a zoom session, with an invigilator viewing constantly.

The first virtual examination was held in March 2021, with candidates from five different companies taking part across the full spectrum of the Timber Trade.

The Exam papers were delivered to each location by courier, signed for by a nominated company representative, who unsealed the exam paper in full view of the Woodexpert representative at the appointed time. At the end of the exam, the nominated company representative placed the completed papers in an envelope closed with a TFT seal in full view of a TFT Woodexpert representative, the papers were then couriered back to TFT Woodexperts for the Examiner to mark them.

On completion of marking, it was noted:

  • There was no significant difference between the remote and live-tutored students.
  • Two of the students scored the highest marks to date with a pass mark in excess of 90%.
  • One third of the successful candidates are women, which is quite significant considering that fewer than 20% women are employed in the Construction as a whole.
  • One student who passed the exam, English was not their first language.

The Level 4 Certificate in Wood science & Timber Technology course provides in-depth knowledge on Wood as a material and how it performs; as well as a detailed understanding of how and why wood is processed and graded, how the manufacture of wood-based panels influenced their properties and uses.

The course is intended for those in the wood industries who require a better understanding of Wood Science to enable them to solve problems related to specification and use; or to understand how to minimise the problems and wastage that often occur when timber and wood-based products are used inappropriately.

It is ideal for management trainees, middle and senior managers and anyone with a more senior role in ordering, specifying or designing in timber. Successful candidates will be eligible for Membership of the IOM 3 at “Technician level (TIMMM).

Evaluating the Prestressing Training Course

Evaluating the Prestressing training course

As part of the British Precast update of the Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP) for the Prestressing of Concrete, Proskills Global Limited is working in conjunction with the review committee to evaluate the Prestressing of Precast Concrete training course and its delivery. This will bring the course in line with the latest changes in the industry.

More and more manufacturers are interested in becoming Approved Partners with Proskills Global Limited, as this enables them to deliver training to their own workforce. There is also an increased interest in competence monitoring for operators. Such courses as Train the Trainer and Train the Assessor are being considered and discussed by the committee, this would ensure that the monitoring is being carried out in a robust manner, along with revisions to the Managers module to include more content.

This overhaul will lead to a revised programme with updated content and delivery. Proskills Global Limited are thrilled to introduce this new model to the industry as this should increase competence and thereby safety and productivity.

Proskills Global Presents Certificates in Construction Product Sales to Howitt Consulting

Proskills Global Presents Certificates in Construction Product Sales to Howitt Consulting

Proskills Global recently attended the certification presentation for the delegates who successfully completed the Howitt Consulting / Proskills Global Certificate in Construction Product Sales course. The event took place on Thursday the 19th of October 2017 at Leicester racecourse.

There were 12 successful delegates of two cohorts, receiving the certification, from a wide range of construction products companies (Kingspan, Spirotech, Aco, Jaga, Knauf, Hambleside Danelaw and Armstrong Ceilings) all of which had placed a huge amount of effort into the qualification and had all earned a worthy distinction.

The ceremony began with a session on the benefits of participation in the course for the delegates. It was very impressive to hear from the company managers and directors present how much progress individuals had made in their competence, efficiency and profitability by putting in all the hard work.

Whilst working with Howitt Consulting on developing the certificate materials and addressing the competencies needed (over 300 of them), the primary aim right from the start was to be sure that any person enrolling on the course would have to put a lot of hard work in to complete it. The delegates we spoke to at the presentation ceremony said “they knew that it was all worthwhile as they could definitely see the benefits after completing the course and used the learning in their day to day work.”

It is great to witness such enthusiasm over the practicality of the course content.

Well done to all the learners for such dedication and great achievements and congratulations to all at Howitt Consulting too for their continued commitment and dedication to high quality delivery.

Partnership Ventures: Bangladeshi Delegation WorldSkills UK Study Tour

Partnership Ventures: Bangladeshi Delegation WorldSkills UK Study Tour

This programme was contracted to Global Skills Ledger of which Proskills Global was an administrative partner. Global Skills Ledger hosted a delegation of Government and education experts from Bangladesh on behalf of British Council from 24th to 28th April 2017.

The UK Study Tour was aimed at supporting and enabling Bangladesh’s development and understanding of WorldSkills participation by providing a more in-depth insight into making WorldSkills work. It explored the collaborative opportunities and the real challenges that lie ahead. The Government of Bangladesh’s aim is to participate in the WorldSkills global competition for the first time in Russia 2019.

WorldSkills, akin to the Olympics, but for skills not sport, showcases the value of skills and raising the recognition of skilled professionals worldwide.—

“Skills are the primary platform from which all our lives are built, from which industry runs and excels, and from which society benefits and prospers. Skills are the driving force behind successful careers and companies, thriving industries and successful economies.” Said Jonathan Ledger, CEO of Global Skills Ledger. “WorldSkills competitions provide a framework that allows countries and individual workers to raise their technical skills capability affording them the chance, not just to be good, but to be best in class and perhaps best in the world.”

The UK Study Tour informed and supported the development of Bangladeshi WorldSkills policy and decision making. It also:

  • showcased UK best practice relating to the preparation for and delivery of local, regional and national events and competitions;
  • demonstrated the skills training that is required to achieve the WorldSkills level of competition;
  • created understanding of how to successfully enthuse and engage with employers, training providers and stakeholders to continually build support for WorldSkills;
  • showed how to create partnerships with public and private training providers and education institutions;
  • demonstrated how WorldSkills competitions can support the domestic supply of skills, the demand for skills, and the matching of supply and demand;
  • highlighted international benchmarking and how this relates to the demand for skills in key international labour markets for Bangladeshi workers.

With a focus on sectors such as fashion, fashion technology, information technology and construction, the UK Study Tour included visits to a wide range of further education colleges who provide support and training to prepare students for participation in World Skills locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. The delegation also met with national and regional WorldSkills representatives to really get under the skills of running competitions and the logistics of delivering successful events.

The Bangladeshi delegates were from the Government of Bangladesh’s National Skills Development Council – Secretariat (NSDC-S), Kora Tech Training Centre BMET, Department of Youth Development, Department of Women’s Affairs and the Directorate of Technical Education

Proskills Global share results of Textile and Garment sector workforce skills study in Hanoi

Proskills Global Limited has been back in Hanoi, Vietnam to share the results of its Textile and Garment sector workforce skills study

The skills study, funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British Embassy in Vietnam (FCO), saw representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs of Vietnam (MOLISA), Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam (MOIT), British Council, Vietnam Textiles and Apparel Association (VITAS) and Vietnam National Textile and Garment Group (VINATEX), employers, industry training providers and other relevant stakeholders, come together to discuss how they will use the results to develop an industry wide and long-term skills strategy.

This study will support the Textile and Garment sector in grasping present and future industrial and economic opportunities and challenges, through improved business performance, bought about by capable and skilled workforce. It will be used to help the industry shape its own skills strategy and to link it to the country’s national policy and Social-Economic Development Strategy, as well as the Textile and Garment industry’s Development Strategy vision to 2020. Additionally, industry-based training institutions will use the results to further develop their capacity and capability to deliver a broader range of high value vocational training and education to workers in order to meet employer demands.

This is the start of a new partnership between the Vietnamese Government and its agencies, employers, training providers and industry associations and it is very exciting to be at the inception of this process. Once we have managed to move forward with the recommendations, we’ll be supporting the Government and industry, in using this approach and the best practice to inform the creation of a transferrable sectoral skills model for adoption by other industrial sectors across Vietnam.” Commented Debbie Watts, International Skills Research Expert.

Vietnam’s textile and garment sector is made up of approximately 6,000 enterprises, 30% of which are Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) companies. The industry employs approximately 2.5 million workers, 60% of which are female. It represents 25% of the country’s industrial sector and constitutes its second largest export market (valued at US$22.8bn in 2015).

Vietnam has the highest rate of industrial growth of all the ASEAN countries and so its workers must be equipped for the challenges this will bring and in order to cease the opportunities this will present.Overhauling the current training and education regime to better suit employer demands will act as an enabler to sustainable growth and diversification of the textile and garment sector.” Said Jonathan Ledger, International Skills Director. “It is great to have helped the industry strategy development and we look forward to supporting their future journey. Working with such a vibrant industry makes it all worthwhile.”
