Accreditations Q&A
1. What is the difference between regulated and non-regulated accreditation?
Regulated accreditation: - Regulated Qualifications Framework /Scottish Credit & Qualifications Framework (RQF/SCQF) applies to courses that cover a minimum of four days training. A NATIONAL qualification requires the trainer/employer to become a Centre for an Awarding Body, fully qualified assessors and IQA’s (Internal Quality Assurers) are essential.
This accreditation can be very expensive and incurs a slow process to amend anything as it requires a change on the national database. (Amendments can take anything up to 6 months and require consultations in all four nations).
Non-regulated accreditation: - Applies to short courses or certificated internal training. It is a “third party Quality Assurance” system which has audits attached but allows the trainer /employer to use experienced staff instead of formally qualifying everyone, it is much cheaper than regulated accreditation and much easier to amend /update or add courses to. It still has the precision of regulated accreditation that Proskills Global applies in a less formal way, which allows the training partner more flexibility in delivery.
2. What is the difference between a Certificate of Training and a Certificate of Competence?
A Certificate of Training and a Certificate of Competence serve different purposes and signify different levels of accomplishment and readiness in a professional context. While a Certificate of Training is a step towards achieving competence, a Certificate of Competence provides a more comprehensive assurance of an individual’s ability to perform a job to the required standard.
Training – This certificate acknowledges completion of a specific training course. A structured method is used to develop an individual’s theoretical knowledge or specific skills through controlled learning. This usually involves specific training courses or on the job training to provide the knowledge required to put theory into practice. Evaluation is based on participation or theoretical assessment post training. The scope is limited to the specific content covered in the training program and does not necessarily reflect the individual’s ability to apply the knowledge effectively in practical applications.
Competency - Comprises of several aspects, of which training is only one. Others include experience and understanding of the task/s in hand, skills, knowledge, the surrounding environment, and a range of human factors effectively and safely. Training and / or qualifications alone will not necessarily mean that a person is competent. There are many situations where an individual’s academic knowledge will not be sufficient to carry themselves and their colleagues through everyday jobs safely. It is experience that shows us what works and what doesn’t. No experience can result in improper decisions being made or, none at all! Evaluation usually involves practical assessments, observations, and possibly examinations. Individuals would also be required to demonstrate their ability to perform tasks competently in actual workplace settings and various conditions.
